Painting over stain?

by JP

I have an unfinished wooden piece that I want to stain and show off the beautiful wood grain, but I also want to do decorative painting with acrylics on top of that. What is the best way to accomplish this? Should I use a water-based stain?

Hi JP,

In a nutshell, I prefer oil based stains, however, in order to be able to paint over it with acrylics, you'll need to spray mist it with Matte Spray. I often use the Krylon brand.

TIP: Consider using a wood conditioner before applying the stain.
