Painting steel cream cans

by Marge
(Grayson,sask Canada)

I have steel brushed and cleaned old cream cans. Next I sprayed the cans with spray paint. I want to paint with acrylic paints on the cans. Do I have to prepare the sprayed paint area with a paint that that will adhere to both enamel and acrylic (if so which is the best paint to use?),or should I give it a lightsanding and wash with TSP, so that I can paint acrylics on them. I will be painting sunflowers ,a deer, and welcome on these cans. They will be indoors.
I’ve included a picture of the type of project I’m interested in.

Here is a link on my website for step-by-step instructions for painting milk/cream cans.

Your acrylics will stick to enamel. If you used a really glossy enamel, then mist it with a clear matte enamel or Krylon Matte sealer. This will give the surface some tooth. Once you're done painting the designs, then use a gloss varnish to get the shine back and to protect your hard work.
