Painting on Slate

A friend generously shared some old barn slate tiles with several of us painting friends. What is the procedure for cleaning, painting, and sealing slate?

Painting on Slate

Hi Clarisse,
Simply wash the slate in warm soapy water, rinse thoroughly and dry. You can then paint directly on the slate without sealing it first.

Once painted, apply varnish. I have a welcome slate tile near my front door. It's been varnished with multiple coats of exterior varnish. As well, I added paste wax for extra durability. It has been exposed to snow, ice, sun, heat...you name it. It is still as good as the day I put it out there over 10 years ago.

Your friend is generous indeed! That's quite the score. Happy painting!
