Painting Faux Leather

Can you paint over leather with chalk paint and if so are there any steps I need to take (like treating the leather with something).

I have an old hat box that has fake leather and I would love to fix it up for my niece. She loves coloring.

When you say chalk paint I'm assuming you're referring to chalky paint.

I'd say clean the surface with a damp cloth to remove any dirt first. Dry thoroughly and then go ahead with the chalky paint.
