Cornish slate

I picked up a piece of cornish slate from the beach. I want to paint a picture on it. I intend using matt enamel paint. I have read that I only have to wash in soapy water and dry before I begin but do I have to varnish afterwards as I want to keep the 'matt' look. if I don't varnish, will all my paint come off? Thanks.
