Already Painted Milk Can

Thanks for your inquiry... If there's already a basecoat and the paint is not flaking that's great! Just wash it down with warm soapy water and rinse well.

You'll need to determine if the basecoat is oil based or water based. Here’s a really good way to test. Take a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol and rub it on the surface. If some of the old paint comes off on the swab, then it’s likely water based.

If it's water based, use acrylic paint for your project. If it's oil based you'll need to use oil paints. BUT, if you prefer acrylics, then you'll have to prime the milk can with a metal primer and follow the instructions here https://www.your-decorative-painting-resource.com/painting-metal.html I hope this helps!
