Rusty milkcan

Hi,
I've been asked to paint a scene on a milkcan, which I was happy to do. Only when the can was delivered to me, it's very rusty.. rust is about the only colour you can see. So my question is.. if I sand lightly to remove any loose bits.. can I spray with a Rustoleum primer and then start painting it? Will the acrylic paint cover the Rustoleum paint (I would get matte) and will the rust eventually seep through? I don't want to put a lot of effort into this and have it wrecked later on.

Thanks so much!
Linda
