Painting over glass tiles


I'm interested in painting over some small 1" tiles that are already installed on my fireplace. I like the translucent quality of the tiles they are like a copper fleck in there. I would like to create a similar look, but make it black. I don't want it to look like I took solid balck paint and painted over tiles. I want it to have a translucent quality or glass quality, I don't mind if some of the copper color comes through. Ideas?? products? techniques.
