How to Change Color of Stained Glass?

by Randy
(San Juan, Puerto Rico)

Hi, I need to change the color of the small brown diamonds in the attached picture to a blue. The lighter blue the better and the more translucent the better. Any suggestions?

Thank you,

Randy Corsi

How to Change Color of Stained Glass?
by: Cheryl

Hi Randy,
Cheryl here from Your Decorative Painting Resource.....

Because stained glass is transparent any transparent layer added on top will be affected by the original color below. For instance, if the diamonds were transparent yellow and you added a transparent red you'd have transparent orange diamonds.

Because blue is a Primary color it cannot be made from brown. If you added a blue transparent layer you'd get a muddy color. Not what you're looking for.

So you can't change it to blue unless you decided to make it opaque, which you've clearly stated you didn't want to do. Wish I had better news for you! For what it's worth, the doors look really nice as they are! :o)

Can I change orange stained glass to red?
by: Susan Molloy

Orange + _____ = Red?
I think you're going to tell me anything I add to orange will look brown. I don't mind if it's opaque - is there opaque glass paint? Would a lamp shade with mostly transparent glass look weird with a few opaque pieces?
Thanks!

Red is a primary color, so you cannot create it by mixing any other colors. Primary colors are colors that exist on their own and do not contain traces of any other color.
In my opinion, if you have opaque pieces of glass mixed in with transparent ones on a lamp shade will not look right, unless you can make it look like it was the intended effect.
Yes, you can get opaque paints that will adhere to glass. Check out https://shop.decoart.com/acrylic-paint/glass-paint/
